ProjectComment presents the community of deviantART a project that will question what it really means to be a commenter, an artist, a member of deviantART. All of these challenges relate to commenting in some shape or form, and we sincerely encourage everyone to take part! :la:

You do not have to be brilliant at writing comments and we are not asking you to perform miraculous feats. We are just looking for people willing to make a difference. It is all too easy to receive constructive comments, but giving them is equally, if not more, rewarding.

Each week, a challenge is set with the deviations of those who participated in the previous week featured in a news article. Many thanks to CameronKobe, OHiNeedTea, DanielleIvanova, WorldWar-Tori, icanthinkofgoodname, Wyntry, RetSamys for participating in Week 14!

The last time he saved meJamie and I always had a very lopsided relationship. Even though we were very close and he never really expressed any desire for things to change, he was always saving me. He was the strong one, battling the world while I hid behind him, cowering in his shadow. In all my life, there was only one time that I ever saw someone go absolutely mental over something that he had done but even then, when I really think about it, it was the last time he ever saved me.
Grandfather stormed into the dining room. His face was red and spit sprayed from his mouth as he screamed about what Jamie had done. He slammed his body so hard against the chair that I thought it might break. He began to explain but I couldn’t help but be distracted by the cracking of the chair – it was his chair, the one no one else was allowed to sit in. Jamie sat in it once, when Grandfather had gone away on business. Smirking at me, he slid down into the chair at the head of the table. When

After the almost dreamlike visit, I kept holding the red handkerchief close, trying to recall the soothing feeling that I had gotten when I had heard the words of reassurance. The smell of peppermints still lingered, along with something I couldn't identify. Something sweeter. I prayed this one memento would be allowed to stay with me before I died. As the streaks of scarlet crawled over my legs, my heart began to clutch up in anticipation despite my efforts. Would he really come?

A hand shook me awake, and I blearily opened my eyes to be greeted with a masked stranger. I instinctively shot back, mouth opening to scream, but it put a hand over my mouth.
"Shh, shh! Keep quiet. I'm trying to help you. Can you not scream?" He whispered. It was him! I nodded, and he removed his hand, wiping it on his shirt, then grabbed a pair of metal cutters.
"I'm just going to take the chains off." He murmured, showing them to me. I let him do so, only grimacing whe

#56 | Weekly Photography Fun!

Sat Apr 19, 2014, 10:02 AM
We are aware how inconvenient our Photography Games Nights can be, so we are bringing the Photography Games Night to you in the form of a weekly blog involving some good ol' photography fun. Some of you may recognise our photography games and some may not, but we all hope you will enjoy what we have in store for you!

This week, we would like to ask you to take part in our games and guess what the photographs below are. Many of you may recognise this as our 'Obscure Photo Game' in our Photography Games Night, which is exactly what is happening here, but in blog form instead!

...but first, let's reveal what last week's photographs were in order! :la:

Hook on Hanger | Rose Petal | Speaker | Inside Track on Rowing Shell | Part of Water Fountain

Congratulations to WorldWar-Tori for being the first to guess hanger, policegirl01 for rose petal, and SepticSkeptik for speaker and part of water fountain. You will each receive :points:, though it will take a bit of time for you to receive them.

The aim of the game...

...is to guess each subject in the photograph correctly.

Please be very clear and specific when you tell us what you think these objects are in a reply to this blog. We do not want just the part of the object. We would like both the part of the object (what the photograph is showing), and the whole object (what the part is a part of/represents).

The first person to guess correctly will win themselves 10 :points:!

You are only allowed one guess for each photograph, so make it count!

Just reply to this blog with the corresponding number and what you think it is!

ProjectComment is a Group that provides Guaranteed & Constructive comments for the deviantART community.

In order to support those efforts, we encourage dedicated users to give comments too. For those who are critics, artists, or just helpful in the community, we now offer something in return for all that you do - be it helping the participants of ProjectComment, or the group itself!

This weekly article focuses on the amazing deviants in the deviantART community, who have given fantastic comments, through excerpts of those comments, artwork by the deviants themselves, and much more! Your support in :+fav: the article would be much appreciated.

Spotlight Commenters

These commenters are determined by you through Nominations (read below for more information). Each month, we will be selecting a couple of amazing commenters based on the comments we have seen in our gallery submissions and elsewhere on deviantART. E.M.U - Episode 1: Meetings, Montague and Redmond by bookloverblue
" I see what you mean now how Monty's antics with Fleetwood are more of the "friendly banter" type than malicious type.  Still, Fleetwood doesn't really appreciate or like it, and he has something big on his mind.  There's a definite positive relationship between Monty, Fleetwood and Redmond.  It's a little odd, since you have EMU members (well, especially Monty) doing things for the sake of being evil, and one wouldn't expect friendship to be a common value between minions.  Friendship and solidarity are things for the good guys, but EMU has both.  And, I like it.  Rather than taking away from what you are doing, it truly adds to it, and makes it incredibly interesting.  These minions, or at least the ones you're showing, are not just your "cardboard henchmen."  They are real people, with feelings, issues, personalities, and what have you.  If they were cardboard henchmen, I could already know what's going to happen and how.  But since they're not, it keeps me wondering.  I suspect the good guys will win out overall, but I sometimes wonder - and I wonder what Fleetwood, Monty, and Redmond will do in the end - and I wonder how everything will develop.  All of that because your characters are real characters, and it lends a wonderful level of complexity to everything.  Bravo, bravo[...]"

April 10, 2014
The park bench had room for more, but held a single occupant.  A thin, medium height man with blond hair and spectacles sat, as comfortably as the bench would allow, reading a book.  He frequented this bench for several reasons; among them were its relative close proximity to the barracks, the fact it provided shade at any time of day and year, and finally, because of the first reason, not many other people would use it.  For Stan, it was ideal.  It gave him an opportunity to relax for a while, and he would smile slightly as he read, contentedly enjoying the weather and the tome.
His friend, Lance, was in the distance, and from the looks of things, he was busily chatting with a couple of women.  One of them started walking away, leaving the other with Lance.  Stan shook his head and smirked as he looked back at his book, thinking to h
The Dog and the StoveI dreaded the inevitable question.  Here I was, in the local Emergency Room, with bruises and burns on my torso, burns on my arms and face, and possibly a couple of fractures.  I've been here before, and they always ask the question.  “How did it happen?”  Lately, the answers I've given, have been embarrassing, but this one may very well take the cake.
I have a dog, which I believe to be a greyhound and lab mix.  After the last visit to the vet for his regular checkup, in which the vet said that a lab structure was similar to that of a greyhound, we still believe there may be some greyhound in him.  It is his very timid nature which makes us believe this.  The dog, whose copper toned brindle coat earned him the name “Copper,” has demonstrated abundant patience with people of all sorts.  Some dogs, if they were struck by a 3 year old child, may grumble, but Copper wouldn't.
With his patience, Copper does not like having som

The throng of people crossed in either direction, closely packed so that there was nearly no room in either front or back of anyone.  In the cobblestone walkways that ran in front of buildings, street merchants set up their stands.  Their awning covered displays occupied most of the side of the dirt road.  Carriages would be riding on the side, but invariably had to weave to the center, to avoid the crowds of people that bulged in front of some merchants.  Many times, this forced the halt of an oncoming carriage or two.  Starting again was never easy, since people walking along would find their way around the stopped vehicles.
If he worked his way through the crowd, he might arrive at the receiver within a ha

"So, first of all, this piece caught my eye because of the bright colours. They really jumped out and grabbed my attention. You wrote that you were going for a childish effect with the style and colouring and i think you succeeded in this, but i'd really like to see you push the boundaries and try something a little more detailed.

I think the thing that stood out most for me in terms of needing improvement is the dragon. There's a little bit of shading on the boy and the boat, but then the head of the dragon seems very flat in comparison. I think it could do with a little more shading.

"You did a great job of framing him right between the leaves and the branches,
drawing my eyes right to his.  About the only improvement I could suggest is more of a
personal preference - a boost to contrast and saturation could give this image a good pop.

DSLRs are set up to capture as much information as they can, which results in flat images; it's
almost necessary to do some post-production to capture what you saw with your eyes.

Anyone on deviantART is applicable for this feature!

Prince by BingBoo
"Prince's face is good, although his eyebrows are a bit uneven/wonky from each other. Also, people's eyebrows are very rarely so close to straight lines - maybe in future you could try to make the eyebrow follow the brow line more (the lower ridge of the forehead, over the eyes). I really like the eyes - so full of colour and light and expression! - but I think his right eye (to the left as we look at it) is maybe positioned too far over, while the iris/pupil are too close to his nose. His expression is really good (so melancholy!) but is in danger of going cross-eyed if one of his eyes had been pointing ever so slightly closer in towards his nose. Does that make sense? I do think it's a bit unusual that his lower lashes are catching my eye more than the upper ones; this isn't impossible, and could also be a style choice of course, and they are more in the light than the upper lashes that are cast into the shadow of his hair. To Find Where I Belong by moosewingz  Bend Towards The SunThe first time Peter comes into work to find flowers on his desk, he blinks once, sniffs them cautiously, and glances around the office.
Joanne, the pretty young brunette working on typescripts a few desks over appears to be giggling into her tea and shooting him sidelong looks. Deciding that that probably solves the mystery, Peter smirks in her direction (which elicits another titter) and throws his coat over the back of his chair, ready to work.

The second time it happens is exactly one week later, by which time Joanne has taken to spending her evenings with that stocky blonde fellow who drives Mr Haydon around. She's not above sending Peter the odd hooded gaze over her typewriter - especially when he wears his silk-backed waistcoat - but unless Peter's seriously losing his edge, they're both well aware that it's just playing.
Peter sets his briefcase down on his desk and picks up the small bunch of yellow germinis, inhaling gently. He's fairly certain this isn't some convoluted pl

The Ice Ray by Glaiceana
"Another area that I think the image could be improved in is the value hierarchy - that is, what different tonal values you have going on in the image and how they're organized. The creature is obviously the primary focal point, but it has lower contrast than some of the less important elements in the image, specifically the moon and the icebergs. It's a pretty dark image because of the black night sky, so you want the subject to have lighter values that make it really stand out in that environment. I know ice is white, but since this is a night scene, I don't think they would appear to be pure white, so you could darken them a bit to allow them to recede in terms of space and importance.[...]"

"Now, you mentioned you wanted me to touch on the expression of their personality in the piece. Because, as I said, I don't know their personalities, I'll be making my judgments purely on what the image itself presents me with. In terms of emotions, the piece feels a little...flat. It's not completely emotionless - I can tell the boy is startled and the dragon looks fierce - but it just doesn't do much for me.

Maybe if the dragon was facing the boy and he looked startled, or the boy was facing more towards the dragon? At the moment the boy looks like he's staring at something else; his angle of view seems to be directed away from the dragon instead of towards it. Perhaps it was intentional and I'm over-analyzing it, but that's what I get out of the piece in terms of emotion. Still, I would suggest showing more interaction between the two.

Almost as soon as he’d opened the door, a cheerful female bounced up to him.  Before he could say anything, the female firmly grasped his right hand with both of hers and shook it vigorously.  Unsure how to react, he stood there in confused silence as she excitedly introduced herself.

“Another Avian!  Finally, I’ve been waiting for another one!” She giggled, finally releasing his hand. “I’m Kiri!  I run the Unity, along with the Avian Sector.  It’s lovely to meet you!  Now…what should I call you?”

Blinking, he replied in a confused tone. “Um…I’m Amero.  Nice to me

Not even the darkness can engulf, once what his brightness illuminates
He is the ethereal arbitrator, the Scar maker.
The harsh malice, the vindictive vice, turns to a tenuous mist,
He is the valiant protector, the Scar Maker.
A hope in despair, a shelter to desolate,
He is the forbearing strider, the Scar Maker.
When the time is to crush the tyrannies,
He is the merciless terminator, the Scar maker.
Whenever I surrendered and unfurled my grip, he snatched me back to life,
He is the fearless savior, the Scar maker.
In my world of renounced trust and tattered beliefs
He is the Faith keeper, the Scar maker!

Comment Month: Commenting Begins!

Mon Apr 7, 2014, 4:49 AM
Back at the beginning of the month, we announced the start of our Comment Month for April. We received a good few submissions in our folder, so, for the rest of this month, it's time to get commenting! :eager:

7th - 30th April: Anybody and everybody can comment on the submissions we received for Comment Month. More information on the day.

1st - 7th May: Comment Month is over, but other things are just beginning. Deviants who have commented constructively on over three submissions will receive a news and page feature and :points:, and any deviations that have not received any comments will also be featured. More information on the day.

Please note:

-> The aim is to comment as constructively as possible. To really make this a successful month, we encourage you to think about your comment and make it constructive, so that it does not consist of one word comments or one sentence comments.

-> Once you have commented on the piece itself, copy the link to that piece and paste it in a reply to this blog.

-> You are free to comment on however many pieces you want!

-> If you would like to comment on a lot of deviations, then please put all links together in just one reply.

-> If you have a question, please don’t hesitate in contacting us.

Many thanks to OHiNeedTea, desiree-amber-moore, LadyMonet23, CameronKobe, Ellofayne, J-Grey, DanielleIvanova, xxEmi-AnGeL-chanxx, Wyntry, Tryskacik for participating in Week 12!

#54 | Weekly Photography Fun!

Sat Apr 5, 2014, 2:42 AM
We are aware how inconvenient our Photography Games Nights can be, so we are bringing the Photography Games Night to you in the form of a weekly blog involving some good ol' photography fun. Some of you may recognise our photography games and some may not, but we all hope you will enjoy what we have in store for you!

This week, we would like to ask you to take part in our games and guess what the photographs below are. Many of you may recognise this as our 'Obscure Photo Game' in our Photography Games Night, which is exactly what is happening here, but in blog form instead!

...but first, let's reveal what last week's photographs were in order! :la:

Headphones | Bamboo Mat | Arrow Rest on Longbow | Hyacinth | Water Fountain

Congratulations to ejrotsih for being the first to guess headphones, Anoya for hyacinth, bedroom-inc for bamboo mat and Zinantis for arrow rest on longbow.

Presenting the photographs... :eager:

If you have some spare :points: you'd like to donate to help us out, we'd very much appreciate your support there too. We will be grateful for any amount you can give here.

"As for the poem itself, it's quite visual, very tangible, even though it's describing a mythical creature.  I have a very easy time imagining the dark beast.  One part that's a bit confusing in the second stanza is the wyrm tearing the speaker's wings away.  Since wyrm is mentioned first, what I imagine is a gigantic snake with wings, so having wings mentioned so soon after made me think the wyrm's wings were torn away (until I read it a second time).  I think switching those elements so that "my wings" are mentioned first, would alleviate the confusion.  In the same stanza, I love your usage of the word 'brumal'. I had never heard it before and had to look it up.  It was an excellent choice because 'brumal' sounds much more dark and dirty than 'wintry'.  Dark & dirty is perfect for the evil creature described in your poem.[...]"

"I agree with gregeyman555 about the blurryness. To fix that, you might want to try using a Hard Edged brush and then switch to a soft one when you want to blend or take focus off of something.

Another issue I'm noticing is that while you're using quite a few colors in your art, they're all too similar in value. Try looking at your artwork in just black and white and you'll see how little contrast there is.

You've got a really nice color palette going with this! They're spread out nicely and adds unity to your artwork. You're definitely on the right track when it comes to picking colors.

"This is a really cool location that you found, great job! A few suggestions in regards to the shot itself:

One of the main artistic concerns of urban exploration photography seems to be to shoot things in the most dramatic way possible. This is mainly achieved through composition, and can also be improved through post-processing. But 99% of the success is in getting this initial shot right.

Now, one of the dramatic devices is to show perspective. You do that to some extent, although here a more wide-angle lens would work better. Another device is symmetry, which seems to be your choice here, but then again you're slightly off. This can be change in post-processing though, consider trying that on this pic.

Red Knobbed Starfish by JoJoAsakura I'm Yours Chapter 31st April 5:34pm – Hiding in the bushes
Okay something really weird just happened. Maybe I’m dreaming. I should pinch myself. Ouch. Bad idea. Oh God. I think I just… no I didn’t, that is just ridiculous. I saw… Ugh forget it. You know what I’ll write it down anyway.

I had just walked out to the porch and was sitting on the small wooden swing by the pretty purple flowers. The flowers are irrelevant. So I’m sitting down swinging lightly and my vision goes again but not all…dark. It sort of changed, if that makes sense.

I wasn’t seeing the green garden with the box hedging down the side. The old moss covered grey patchy stones that make up the wall down the end. The big old oak tree surrounded by the apple trees. My golden lab gnawing on a pig’s ear I threw her before I sat down. Or the white daisy’s that were beginning to take over the grass.

It all sort of faded away

A type of Flash Fiction, six word stories are (very) short stories with an exact word count: six words. SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. Though these stories are so brief in length, they can be as profound, if not more, than the prose and poetry you see and read every day, partly because six word stories can tell us so much and yet contain so little.

In our feature articles, we will be showcasing six word stories submitted to Freestyle folder.

Comment Month: April

Tue Apr 1, 2014, 10:45 AM
Alongside our Monthly Photography Critique Thread and other critiquing opportunities, we are hosting a Comment Month this April!

Every single one of us deserves at least one insightful comment on our deviations. We have all needed to start somewhere and some just need that extra boost to really get going.

Our timeline is as follows:

1st – 7th April: Members of CRPhotography can suggest one deviation for a chance to receive some comments. This is a chance for any underappreciated artist to get the comments they deserve.

-> Submission is only open to members of CRPhotography, though anyone can give a constructive comment.

-> To really make this a successful month, we encourage you to think about your comment and make it constructive, so that it does not consist of one word comments or one sentence comments.

-> We will keep you up to date with what’s happening, so don’t worry if you’re confused about future events. All will be explained.

-> If you have a question, please don’t hesitate in contacting us.

Submissions Open Now!

Starting from today, submissions will be accepted for Comment Month in this folder!

Can’t Wait?

Those who cannot wait until the 7th April to comment can comment on the deviations submitted right now! Just keep a list of the deviations you’ve commented on in link form in a word document somewhere ready for when commenting officially starts!

We hope that everyone participates in Comment Month, whether it is through suggesting or commenting instead. You really can’t 'lose' here, so please join in, spread the word (the more people the better!), have fun, suggest and comment, comment, comment! :eager:
